What is an All-Terrain Crane?

An all-terrain crane, as the name suggests, is a type of mobile crane that is built to function on all different types of terrains and weather conditions. This includes rugged terrain on the job site or smooth riding on public roads and highways. A great way to think about all-terrain cranes is a combination of a rough terrain crane and a truck-mounted crane.

Common Features and Accessories

These cranes typically feature components like:

  • Integrated telescoping boom
  • 1 or 2 engines
  • All wheel drive
  • Counterweight

Accessories and add-ons like a boom extension, light packages, and all-weather operator cabs are generally available as well.

Why Rent an All-Terrain Crane?

An all-terrain crane offers unrivaled versatility on the construction site when it comes to maneuverability and the ability to lift heavy equipment. Their ability to work both on- and off-road provides a distinct set of advantages for a variety of applications. These cranes are commonly used on job sites without access to a public road because of their ability to traverse different types of terrains. Specific applications where you’ll often find an all-terrain crane include:

  • Steel erection
  • Erection of wind turbines
  • Installation of pipelines
  • Architectural precast
  • HVAC work
  • New construction

All-Terrain Crane Considerations

There’s a lot to consider when choosing the right equipment to rent for your construction project, but here are the main things to remember:

If you are looking for a mobile crane that can travel over a commercial construction site with unpredictable weather and terrain as well as on public roads, all-terrain is the way to go. There is no mobile crane that is more versatile when it comes to maneuverability.

Further, an all-terrain crane will generally have a higher maximum lifting capacity than other mobile cranes. This does mean that an all-terrain crane handles heavier loads and takes up more area, so keep that in mind when considering restrictions with tight spaces.

Due to their superior maneuverability, durability, and power, these cranes are generally considered “luxury” mobile cranes. They certainly provide a level of comfort you won’t find in other cranes, but it’s important to think if you really need one for your worksite.

If you are looking to rent an all-terrain crane in Atlanta, Orlando, or across the Southeast, contact us today. We will be happy to discuss the unique needs of your project and set you up for success with the right crane.
