What is a Boom Truck?

Boom trucks, sometimes called bucket trucks, refer to a wide range of vehicles that feature a hydraulic crane mounted on a commercial truck chassis. These trucks are extremely versatile and are commonly found on construction sites. From lifting heavy loads or workers to new heights to carrying construction equipment or building materials across the job site, boom trucks help out workers in a variety of industries.

Common Features and Accessories

Boom trucks usually feature components like:

  • A telescopic boom
  • Boom cylinder
  • Boom head
  • Outriggers
  • Flatbed

They will also have an end attachment like a hook, winch, or cherry picker for lifting personnel.

Why Rent a Boom Truck?

Boom trucks offer unrivaled versatility on the construction site. Perhaps their biggest advantage is the fact that they can typically be driven on freeways. This gives them a distinct maneuverability advantage over other mobile cranes, like all-terrain or rough terrain cranes. In addition, they can also function like a flatbed truck, transporting materials or small machinery across a job site, or even across the city.

A wide variety of industries benefit from a boom truck crane, but these are some of the most common:

  • Construction Projects
  • Utility Companies
  • HVAC Companies

Boom Truck Considerations

These construction vehicles can provide a wide variety of benefits on a construction site. Here are the main things to remember.

Boom trucks offer unrivaled mobility on the job. Their ability to travel on freeways can’t be matched by other mobile cranes. That being said, on sites with uneven or difficult terrain, it’s a good idea to have a rough terrain or all-terrain crane available as well.

Due to their size, these cranes are great for tight spaces or smaller projects. Of course, they are a welcome, sometimes necessary, addition to larger jobs as well.

These are generally the best cranes for lifting personnel. There is a wide array of options available when lifting someone to new heights for different applications.
