Diabetes is a horrible disease that affects millions around the world. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in the U.S. alone, there are 29.1 million people who suffer from this illness. That comes out to be about one person out of every 11. Every day, almost 5,000 people learn they have diabetes. Even worse, one out of every four of those who do have diabetes do not know they have it, which means the disease is advancing very quickly.
Another 86 million people in the U.S. have pre-diabetes, which could develop into full diabetes within five years if they don’t change their diet and activity level.
The disease can increase the risk of a number of different health complications:
- Blindness
- Loss of legs, feet, or toes
- Kidney failure
- Stroke
- Heart disease
Those who don’t realize they have diabetes or aren’t managing it correctly may also fall into a diabetic coma, which can result in death.
What Can You Do About It?
Diabetes claims the lives of thousands of people every year and leaves many more in pain or unable to work. Here at Superior Rigging and Erecting Co., a number of our team members have loved ones who are dealing with diabetes every day. We see them dealing with everything this illness brings with it: the many doctor’s appointments, the shots and other medication, and the concern that their condition may get worse.
We want to see this disease eradicated now so that our friends and family members no longer have to suffer. To that end, we are partnering with the American Diabetes Association to raise money for diabetes research and are participating in the OUC Orlando Half Marathon & Track Shack Lake Eola 5K. This event will be held on December 2, 2017.
